CV Writing Tips

Getting the right balance of information is vital in CV writing as too much information can be as damaging as giving away too little.

It is widely recognised that a good CV should be no more than 2 pages and should be a marketing tool to generate interest from prospective employers and recruiters. It should be a brief and concise document outlining your education, employment history and key achievements and should not be an autobiography! Getting the right balance of information is vital in CV writing as too much information can be as damaging as giving away too little.

Ongoing changes in the recruitment market, particularly with the evolution of job board usage and the increased volumes of response generated from advertised vacancies, makes it even more important to consider  how your CV is constructed and how searchable it is on CV posting sites such as Monster,  Jobsite and Just Engineers for example.

However, in the meantime to get you started, here a few key points for you to consider.

Key Considerations 

  • Always be honest with the information you give as this can be checked easily.
  • Provide information on training courses attended and qualifications gained.
  • Start your employment history with your present company first and work backwards.
  • Provide more detailed information about your job roles over the last 5 years.
  • Be succinct and to the point.
  • Provide details of a few hobbies. 

CV Do’s and Don’ts 

  • Do check for grammatical and typing errors- use Spellchecker!
  • Do be honest.
  • Do emphasise your key achievements.
  • Do ensure that your contact details are on your CV.
  • Don’t make your CV too long as this will discourage the reader.
  • Don’t use outlandish font, stick to the mainstream versions

Remember that when you apply for a job you are potentially competing with hundreds of other CV’s.  It is vital that your CV stands out from the crowd and sells your skills and achievements effectively.  It is therefore imperative that you invest time in the preparation of the document to ensure that you give yourself the best possible chance of securing interviews.
